White Tail Spider control

Large Female White Tail Spider

One of Melbourne's most feared and misunderstood spiders is the White Tail (Lampona cylindrata). The bite of this spider supposedly causes a severe skin ulceration known as Necrotising arachnidism. The White Tail is a hunter type and doesn't actually build it's own web. It hunts and stalks other spiders like a cannibal. It lives off the webs of other spiders.

The White Tail is an efficient killer and one of its favorite meals is adult and young Black House Spiders. While removing the cobwebs of Black House Spiders we are actually deterring the White Tail.

White Tail Spider bites are well documented in medical literature.
The best control in my experience is to keep leaf litter to a minimum and to keep areas like windows and under gutters sprayed with surface spray.
My research in Australia and New Zealand literature is that these spiders are mostly nocturnal and are venomous from birth.
