Gutter guards are never a complete solution

04 August 2009

Some gutter guards claim to be perfect. Some gutter guard companies will try to convince you that you'll never have to clean your gutters again with their system installed. After years of experience we have realized that no gutter protection system is perfect. Even the most expensive gutter guards can eventually fill up with dirt and sediment after years of weather. No gutter protection device is 100% maintenance free. There are many factors that come into play.

Even with the best guttering and guards installed you may still require clearing of leaves and debris from your roof. Leaves can build up in your valleys and behind your skylights and chimneys. We have clients who have paid thousands for expensive gutter guards and they call us to come out and sweep the valleys.

Some gutter guards fail in the springtime. They give you good protection during summer, autumn and winter but in spring, fine particles of pollen seeds and bark penetrate the mesh. Finer mesh designs may be better at protecting your gutters in spring.

I have seen meshes as fine as fly wire. Small particles of dust and pollen will penetrate even the finest mesh. If your guttering is flowing correctly most of this dust should flush down the pipes when it rains.

While gutter guards and downpipe strainers are not 100% perfect but in many cases they are necessary and can save you time and money. After cleaning your gutters Grayson's can advise you whether or not guttering protection will be suitable for your particular system.
